Cinnamon Does Not Lower Blood Sugar Levels

Several studies have checked for the effectiveness of cinnamon in lowering blood sugar levels. Their results have been inconclusive. This has led Dr. Craig I. Coleman, of Hartford Hospital to lead a “meta-analysis” of five studies to analyze the combined results.

Dr. Coleman concludes, "The preponderance of evidence currently available does not suggest that cinnamon has the ability to decrease a person's risk of heart disease by helping them control their diabetes or lower their cholesterol."

He used studies totaling 282 patients who were randomly given cinnamon or a placebo for up to 16 weeks. At the end of the study period, it was found that cinnamon did not significantly change hemoglobin A1C, the indicator of blood sugar control. It also had no effect on fasting blood sugar levels or lipids (blood fats).

Based on the current study, Coleman said, "We would not recommend its use to patients."
