High Blood Sugar Increases Risk of New Polyps
People with elevated insulin or blood sugar levels when colonoscopy was used to remove polyps had an increased risk of having more polyps develop including the type that leads to cancer according to a new study. Those with increased risk include the lower blood sugar levels that doctors would consider "pre-diabetes" says Dr. Andrew Flood of University of Minnesota.
He and his colleagues found that polyp recurrence was about 50% higher for those with the highest blood sugar levels compared with the lowest in the study group. He also noted that the recurrence of polyps leading to cancer were twice as high as the lowest group.
For this reason, those who have already had one or more polyps removed should consider more aggressive treatment of blood sugar levels says Dr. Flood.
