A Bedtime Dose of Vinegar May Benefit Those with Type 2 Diabetes
A dose of vinegar at bedtime may have a beneficial impact on morning glucose levels for those with type 2 diabetes says a study published in Diabetes care.
"Given the importance of maintaining acceptable blood glucose concentrations, there is much interest in identifying foods and diet patterns that will help individuals with diabetes manage their condition," write Dr. Carol S. Johnston and colleagues from Arizona State University, Mesa.
The study composed of four men and seven women aged 40 to 72 years with type 2 diabetes who were not taking insulin. Their fasting glucose level was measured at 7 a.m. for three consecutive days. They consumed a standardized meal for two days while taking either two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or water at bedtime along with one ounce of cheese. After three to five days of a “washout period,” the treatment of reversed. Those getting water received vinegar and those getting vinegar were given water.
Investigators found that those receiving water had a 2% drop in glucose levels while those on vinegar had a 4% drop. Glucose levels dropped the most for those with the highest levels averaging a 7% reduction.
"Vinegar is widely available, it is affordable, and it is appealing as a remedy, but much more work is required to determine whether vinegar is a useful adjunct therapy for individuals with diabetes," the authors conclude.
