November Is American Diabetes Month

Diabetes has become the fastest grown health care crisis of the 21st century. 25% of Americans have or are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. To bring this to public awareness, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has made this American Diabetes Month.

Each week in November, the ADA will highlight the "Many Faces of Diabetes."

  • Week 1 — Caregivers
Supporting a loved one that has diabetes has its own special challenges.
  • Week 2 — Employees
By promoting healthy lifestyles in the workplace, companies can help prevent type 2 diabetes and save thousands of dollars a year at the same time.
  • Week 3 — Diabetes around the world
Today, over 246 million people worldwide have diabetes. That number is expected to rise to 380 million by 2020. The ADA supports November 14 as World Diabetes Day. They also support the United Nations Resolution on Diabetes which invites supporters to fight the diabetes epidemic through public awareness and the development of policies for the prevention, treatment, and care of the disease.
  • Week 4 — At-risk populations
Half the minorities born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime if the current trend continues.
  • Week 5 — Youth and Type 1 Diabetes
Those with the most urgent need for care are the youth diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The new ADA Planet D campaign will provide resources and networking to those youth and their families.
