Inhaled Insulin Discontinued

The inhaled insulin sold under the name of Exubera has been withdrawn from the market by Pfizer which is taking a $2.8 billion loss on it. The treatment designed for type 1 and type 2 diabetes "simply not found the acceptance of doctors and patients," Chief Executive Jeff Kindler told analysts.

Exubera made history as the form of inhaled insulin. Although other companies are trying to develop similar products, Pfizer is returning the worldwide rights to the product back to Nektar Therapeutics who partnered in developing the drug. They will spend the next three months working with patients to switch to other diabetic treatments.
