Walking May Cut Diabetes Risk

Regular exercise such as brisk walking is know to cut the risk of type 2 diabetes. A Japanese study set out to determine whether light exercise, such as a leisurely walk to work, would have the same benefit.

The researchers found that men who took at least 21 minutes walking to work had a 25% less chance of developing diabetes than those who walked 10 minutes or less.

Dr. Kyoko Kogawa Sato and colleagues at Osaka City University Graduate School of Medicine report their results in the journal Diabetes Care. The study involved 8,600 men who worked for the same Japanese employer and had similar sedentary lives and had normal blood sugar levels. The men were followed for four years.

According to Sato’s team, regular walking may improve the body’s sensitivity to insulin. The findings indicated that walking, even if it is walking to work, will reduced the risk of diabetes if it is long enough.
