High Glycemic Index Diet Associated with Vision Loss
The type of carbohydrates in the diet can raise the risk of age-related macular degeneration. This is the most common cause of vision loss in older adults. But even though carbohydrate-related mechanisms and diabetes-related diseases shared common factors, only one small study had been done to verify the relationship.
Dr. Allen Taylor, of Tufts University, conducted a study of more than 4,000 subjects aged 55 to 80 years in an eye disease study. He and his colleagues found that high-glycemic index diets, the type of carbs that quickly raised blood sugar levels, significantly raised the risk of age-related macular degeneration.
The researchers estimated that 20% of the cases could have been prevented with a low-glycemic index diet.
