Low Glycemic Load Diabetic Diet May Fight Acne
While low glycemic load diets have been promoted for weight loss and diabetics, a new study showed that men with acne had a significant reduction in the number of outbreaks, Dr. Robyn N. Smith of RMIT University in Melbourne, Victoria and colleagues found.
Low glycemic load diets are those containing slower digesting complex carbohydrates. Since they break down slower in the digestive tract, they have less impact on blood sugar levels. High starch, low fiber foods like white bread and refined sugars cause large spikes in sugar levels.
Given that high levels of insulin may contribute to acne, Smith and her team note, it's possible that reducing dietary glycemic load could reduce acne severity. This should also help level out large fluctuations in blood sugar levels important to diabetics.
